Alisha: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Arabic learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Alisha: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""Can you eat Egyptian food?"" In Arabic this is
Carole: هل تستطيع تناول الأكل المصري؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is
Carole: هل
Alisha: ""meaning did"" in English.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) هل
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Carole: هل

Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Carole: تستطيع
Alisha: meaning you can.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) تستطيع
Alisha: Now repeat.

★ Note that this is how you ask “Can you eat Arabic food?” if you are asking a male person. If you are asking a female person, you would say:
Carole: هل تستطيعين تناول الأكل المصري؟
Alisha: Please repeat.
Carole: هل تستطيعين تناول الأكل المصري؟

Alisha: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question Can you eat Egyptian food??
Carole: نعم, إنه لذيذ
Alisha: ""Yes, it's delicious.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Carole: (Slow) نعم, إنه لذيذ

Alisha: To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Carole: عفواَ, لا أستطيع
Alisha: Which is like saying “I’m sorry, I can't” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Carole: (Slowly) عفواَ, لا أستطيع
Alisha: And one more time at normal speed:
Carole: عفواَ, لا أستطيع
Alisha: Let's break the original response down from the beginning. The first word:
Carole: نعم
Alisha: means yes.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) نعم
Alisha: Now repeat
Carole: نعم

Carole: إنه
Alisha: meaning it's.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) إنه
Alisha: Now repeat.

Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace delicious with not bad.
Carole: ليس بسئ
Alisha: not bad
Carole: (slow) ليس بسئ (regular) ليس بسئ
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with not bad
Carole: نعم, إنه ليس بسئ
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace delicious. Say Yes, it's not bad.

Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace not bad with tasty.
Carole: شهي
Alisha: tasty
Carole: (slow) شهي (regular) شهي
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with tasty

Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “not bad”. Say Yes, it's tasty.

Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace tasty with good.
Carole: جيد
Alisha: good
Carole: (slow) جيد (regular) جيد
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with good
Carole: نعم, إنه جيد
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace tasty. Say Yes, it's good.

Carole: نعم, إنه جيد
QUIZ
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Egypt and someone asks if you can eat Egyptian food. You want to answer that it is delicious. Respond to the question.
Carole: هل تستطيع تناول الأكل المصري؟ (five seconds) نعم, إنه لذيذ
Alisha: Now, you want to say that it's not bad Respond to the question.
Carole: هل تستطيع تناول الأكل المصري؟ (five seconds) نعم, إنه ليس بسئ
Alisha: Now, you want to say that it's tasty. . Answer the speaker's question.
Carole: هل تستطيع تناول الأكل المصري؟ (five seconds) نعم, إنه شهي
Alisha: Now, you want to say that it's good. Respond to the question.
Carole: هل تستطيع تناول الأكل المصري؟ (five seconds) نعم, إنه جيد
Alisha: Now you want to ask someone if they can eat Egyptian food. Ask the masculine version of the question.
