INTRODUCTION
Alisha: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Arabic learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Alisha: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""Where did you learn Arabic?"" In Arabic this is
Carole: أين درست العربية؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is
Carole: أين
Alisha: ""meaning where"" in English.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) أين
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Carole: أين

Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Carole: درست
Alisha: meaning you study.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) درست
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: درست
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Carole: أين درست
{pause}
Alisha: And next
Carole: العربية
Alisha: meaning arabic.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) العربية
Alisha: Now repeat.

Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.

★ Note that this is how you ask “Do you speak Arabic?” if you are asking a male person. If you are asking a female person, you would say:

Alisha: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question Where did you learn Arabic??
Carole: درستها في المدرسة
Alisha: ""I learned it in school.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Carole: (Slow) درستها في المدرسة

Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Carole: درستها
Alisha: means I studied it.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) درستها
Alisha: Now repeat
Carole: درستها
{Pause}
Alisha: And next
Carole: في
Alisha: meaning in.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) في
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: في

Alisha: And next
Carole: المدرسة
Alisha: meaning school.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) المدرسة
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: المدرسة

Alisha: Listen to the speaker say, I learned it in school., and then repeat.
Carole: درستها في المدرسة

Alisha: To make another phrase, replace school with at home.
Carole: البيت
Alisha: at home
Carole: (slow) البيت (regular) البيت
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “at home”
Carole: درستها في البيت
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace school. Say I learned it in at home.

Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace at home with “in college”.

Alisha: in college
Carole: (slow) الجامعة (regular) الجامعة
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with in college

Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “at home”. Say I learned it in in college.

Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace “in college” with a cultural center.
Carole: المركز الثقافي
Alisha: the cultural center

Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “a cultural center”
Carole: درستها في المركز الثقافي
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “in college”. Say I learned it in a cultural center.

Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Egypt and someone asks you where you learned Arabic. You learned Arabic school. Respond to the question.
Carole: أين درست العربية؟ (five seconds) درستها في المدرسة
Alisha: Now, imagine you learned it at home Respond to the question.
Carole: أين درست العربية؟ (five seconds) درستها في البيت
Alisha: Imagine you learned it in college. . Answer the speaker's question.
Carole: أين درست العربية؟ (five seconds) درستها في الجامعة
Alisha: Imagine you learned it at a cultural center. Respond to the question.
Carole: أين درست العربية؟ (five seconds) درستها في المركز الثقافي
Alisha: Now you want to ask someone where they learned Arabic. Ask the masculine version of the question.
