INTRODUCTION
Alisha: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Arabic learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Alisha: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""How long you been studying Arabic?"" In Arabic this is
Carole: كم مضى لك في دراسة العربية؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is
Carole: كم
Alisha: ""meaning how long"" in English.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) كم
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Carole: كم

Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Carole: مضى
Alisha: meaning has gone.

Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with one year

Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace half a year. Say For one year.

Alisha: To make another phrase, replace one year with 7 months.
Carole: سبعة أشهر
Alisha: 7 months
Carole: (slow) سبعة أشهر (regular) سبعة أشهر
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 7 months
Carole: مضى لي سبعة أشهر
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace one year. Say For 7 months.

Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Egypt and someone asks you how long you have been studying Arabic. You have been studying it for 1 month. Respond to the question.

Alisha: Imagine you've been studying it for half a year Respond to the question.
Carole: كم مضى لك في دراسة العربية؟ (five seconds) مضى لي نصف عام
Alisha: Imagine you've been studying it for one year. . Answer the speaker's question.
Carole: كم مضى لك في دراسة العربية؟ (five seconds) مضى لي سنة
Alisha: Imagine you've been studying it for 7 months. Respond to the question.
Carole: كم مضى لك في دراسة العربية؟ (five seconds) مضى لي سبعة أشهر
Alisha: Now you want to ask someone how long -they- have been studying Arabic. Ask the masculine version of the question
(5 seconds)
