INTRODUCTION
Alisha: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Arabic learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Alisha: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""Have you been to Cairo?"" In Arabic this is
Carole: هل ذهبت إلى القاهرة؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is
Carole: هل
Alisha: ""meaning did"" in English.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) هل
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Carole: هل
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Carole: ذهبت
Alisha: meaning you've gone.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) ذهبت
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: ذهبت
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Carole: هل ذهبت
{pause}
Alisha: And next
Carole: إلى
Alisha: meaning to.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) إلى
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: إلى
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Carole: هل ذهبت إلى
{pause}
Alisha: And after that
Carole: القاهرة
Alisha: meaning Cairo.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) القاهرة
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: القاهرة
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the the first 4 words of the question and repeat.
Carole: هل ذهبت إلى القاهرة
{pause}
Alisha: And next
Carole: من
Alisha: meaning from.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) من
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: من
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the the first 5 words of the question and repeat.
Carole: هل ذهبت إلى القاهرة من
{pause}
Alisha: And next
Carole: قبل
Alisha: meaning before.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) قبل
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: قبل
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Carole: هل ذهبت إلى القاهرة من قبل
{pause}
★ Note that this is how you ask “Have you been to Cairo?” if you are asking a male person. If you are asking a female person, you would say:
Carole: هل ذهبت إلى القاهرة من قبل؟
Alisha: Please repeat.
Carole: هل ذهبت إلى القاهرة من قبل؟
{pause}
Alisha: Master the following pattern and responses to the question Have you been to Cairo??
Carole: نعم, ذهبت مرتين
Alisha: ""Yes, I've been twice.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Carole: (Slow) نعم, ذهبت مرتين
{pause}
Alisha: To say ""no"", in a simple way, just say:
Carole: لا, لم يسبق لي أن ذهبت إلى القاهرة من قبل
Alisha: Which is like saying no, I haven't been in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Carole: (Slowly) لا, لم يسبق لي أن ذهبت إلى القاهرة من قبل
Alisha: And one more time at normal speed:
Carole: لا, لم يسبق لي أن ذهبت إلى القاهرة من قبل
Alisha: Now let's break down our original response from the beginning. The first word:
Carole: نعم
Alisha: means yes.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) نعم
Alisha: Now repeat
Carole: نعم
{Pause}
Alisha: And next
Carole: ذهبت
Alisha: meaning I've gone.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) ذهبت
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: ذهبت
{Pause}
Alisha: And next
Carole: مرتين
Alisha: meaning twice.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) مرتين
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: مرتين
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say, Yes, I've been twice., and then repeat.
Carole: نعم, ذهبت مرتين
{pause}
Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace twice with three times.
Carole: ثلاث مرات
Alisha: three times
Carole: (slow) ثلاث مرات (regular) ثلاث مرات
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with three times
Carole: نعم, ذهبت ثلاث مرات
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace twice. Say Yes, I've been three times.
{pause}
Carole: نعم, ذهبت ثلاث مرات
Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace three times with 10 times.
Carole: ١٠ مرات
Alisha: 10 times
Carole: (slow) ١٠ مرات (regular) ١٠ مرات
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 10 times
Carole: نعم, ذهبت ١٠ مرات
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace three times. Say Yes, I've been 10 times.
{pause}
Carole: نعم, ذهبت ١٠ مرات
Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace 10 times with 5 times.
Carole: ٥ مرات
Alisha: 5 times
Carole: (slow) ٥ مرات (regular) ٥ مرات
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 5 times
Carole: نعم, ذهبت ٥ مرات
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 10 times. Say Yes, I've been 5 times.
{pause}
Carole: نعم, ذهبت ٥ مرات

Hi Daniel,

We have been fixing typos and mistakes in the lessons PDFs these days. When you have the time, check this lesson's PDF again and you'll find many ways to answer the common question :"Have you ever been to ?".

The "na'am, qalilan" translation mistake was also fixed.

Thank you very much for your feedback! We really appreciate it!

Hello,

the pdf for this lesson does not contain any no answers to the question, athough one such answer is given in the audio.

Also, in the Vocabulary Sample Sentences, the arabic "Nam, qalilan" is translated with Yes, I'm a little hungry.
