INTRODUCTION
Alisha: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Arabic learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Alisha: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""What's this?"" In Arabic this is
Carole: ما هذا؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is
Carole: ما
Alisha: ""meaning what"" in English.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) ما
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Carole: ما
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Carole: هذا
Alisha: meaning this.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) هذا
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: هذا
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Carole: ما هذا
{pause}
Alisha: Master the following pattern and responses to the question What's this??
Carole: إنها كاميرا
Alisha: ""It's a camera.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Carole: (Slow) إنها كاميرا

Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Carole: إنها
Alisha: means It's.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) إنها
Alisha: Now repeat
Carole: إنها

Alisha: And next
Carole: كاميرا
Alisha: meaning camera.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) كاميرا
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: كاميرا

Alisha: Listen to the speaker say, It's a camera., and then repeat.
Carole: إنها كاميرا

Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace camera with cup .
Carole: كوب
Alisha: cup
Carole: (slow) كوب (regular) كوب
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with cup
Carole: إنه كوب
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace camera. Say It's a cup

Carole: إنه كوب
Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace cup with watch.
Carole: ساعة
Alisha: watch
Carole: (slow) ساعة (regular) ساعة
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with watch
Carole: إنها ساعة
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace cup. Say It's a watch.

Carole: إنها ساعة
Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace watch with bicycle.
Carole: دراجة
Alisha: bicycle
Carole: (slow) دراجة (regular) دراجة
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with bicycle
Carole: إنها دراجة
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace watch. Say It's a bicycle.
