Lesson focus
|
In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to a phrase that will provide you with the tools to learn from the people around you. Now, a dictionary is a great idea, but don't forget that you can use Arabic to learn in a more fun and interactive way. |
For today, we're going to need a word, as we’re going to cover "How do you say (something) in Arabic?" For today's lesson, let's use "bread" for that something. |
In Arabic, "How do you say 'bread' in Arabic?" is šunū huwa bread bial-ʿrbiyah? (بالعربية؟ bread شنو هو) |
Let’s break it down by syllable: šunū huwa bread bial-ʿrbiyah? |
Let's hear it again: šunū huwa bread bial-ʿrbiyah? |
The first word šunū (شنو) means "what" |
Let's break it down and hear it one more time: šunū |
šunū |
This is followed by huwa (هو), which roughly translates to "is" |
huwa |
huwa |
So to recap here, we have: šunū huwa bread, literally, this means "What is 'bread'?” |
Let’s take a look at the next, b (ب), which means "in" |
b |
b |
šunū huwa bread b |
And this is followed by al-ʿrbiyah (العربية), which you can guess, is "Arabic." |
al-ʿrbiyah |
al-ʿrbiyah |
So altogether, we have: šunū huwa bread bial-ʿrbiyah? |
And literally, ths means "What is 'bread' in Arabic?" |
You can also use this expression without using any English. To accomplish this, you can say "How do you say this in Arabic?" |
In Arabic, “this” is haḏā |
haḏā |
šunū haḏā bilʿarbyah? (شنو هذا بالعربية؟) |
Let’s break it down by syllable: šunū haḏā bilʿarbyah? |
Now let's hear it again: šunū haḏā bilʿarbyah? |
The first word, šunū, as we said earlier, is "what" |
šunū |
šunū |
And this is followed by haḏā, which is "this." |
haḏā |
haḏā |
So to recap here, we have: šunū haḏā, and literally, this means “what this?” |
Now let’s take a look at the next, b, which means "in" |
b |
b |
This is followed by al-ʿrbiyah (العربية), and again, it means "Arabic." |
al-ʿrbiyah |
So altogether, we have: šunū haḏā bilʿarbyah? |
And literally, this means “what this in Arabic?” or “what’s this in Arabic?” |
To ask "How do you say that in Arabic?" simply substitute the word “that,” hadāk, for “this,” haḏā. |
"How do you say that in Arabic?" is šunū hadāk bilʿrbyah? (شنو هداك بالعربية؟) |
One more time slowly: šunū hadāk bilʿrbyah? |
šunū hadāk bilʿrbyah? |
When someone answers you a question, you may not catch what he or she said in Arabic the first time, you can have the confused look on your face or you can ask them to say it again. We've learned that expression before but let me remind you. |
“One more time please” is marrahʾuḫrā ‘afâk |
marrahʾuḫrā ‘afâk |
marrah means “time”; ʾuḫrā means “another”; and ‘afâk means “please.” |
marrahʾuḫrā ‘afâk. |
marrahʾuḫrā ‘afâk. |
Outro
|
Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so حظ سعيد, that means "good luck" in Arabic. |
Ok, here we go! |
