Lesson Transcript

Hi, everybody!
Do you know how to say “Bye” in Arabic? In this lesson, you'll learn three parting expressions in Arabic.
Let’s start with the easiest one.
مع السلامة
[slowly] مع السلامة
This means "Goodbye" in Arabic. It literally means "Go in peace."
The first word, maca (مع), means "with," and the second word, as-salaama (السلامة), means "peace." It's important to remember that you must stress the s's in order to pronounce the word correctly.
If you want to say "bye" at night, as a male speaker, you can use this phrase.
تصبح على خير
[slowly] تصبح على خير
This means "Good night" in Arabic. Note that this is the masculine form.
tuSbiH (تصبح) is the conjugated form of a word similar to "become." Following this is cala (على), which means "on." And the last word is khayr (خير), which means "good."
If you are a female speaker and you want to say "good night," here's a phrase for you.
تصبحي على خير
[slowly] تصبحي على خير
This is the feminine form. This means "Good night" in Arabic.
When addressing a woman, we must first conjugate the verb tuSbih to the feminine form tuSbihi (تصبحي). This changes the expression "good night" to tuSbiHii cala khayr.
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the words and repeat after me.
"Goodbye" or literally "go in peace."

Well done! [pause] Here's a fun fact!
In Arabic, there's another way of saying goodbye, especially if you know you're going to see the other person again. If this is the case, you'd say, ila al-liqaa (الى اللقاء). This phrase can be used both among friends and in more formal gatherings. Translated literally, this phrase means "so long" or "until we meet again."
You just learned how to say “Bye” in three different ways in Arabic.
