POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hala: After enjoying a delicious meal in any Egyptian restaurant, and paying the check
Roland: its expected to leave tips, the trick is, how much and how to make sure its the right amount ,so here is how it goes!
Hala: In a small normal restaurant, its any amount between 3 to 6 pounds, depends on the place , but, in big restaurants, its 10% of the total, this is not official, but its common knowledge to everyone.
Roland: yes, the more pleased you are, the more you can give, even if you are just buying sandwiches and leaving, you would be expected to leave a very small tip, to the guy who makes it, or the guy who wraps it, usually he does both.
Hala: So he deserves it.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Roland: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word/phrase we’ll look at is....
Hala: خَلّي الباقِي عَشانِك. (ḫallī al-bāqiī ʿašānik)
Roland: this means "keep the rest for you ", one of many ways to give tips . very polite and popular.
Hala: the verb used here "ḫallī ", has 6 meanings depending where it comes in the sentence , but in this case, its imperative with the meaning of (keep).
Roland: I am interested to know about the 6 cases Hala, let's leave it till later, this one is more than enough for now!
Roland: and the second word we will look at is
Hala: عَشانِك (ʿašānik)
this is "ašān),which has an important meaning as "because ", plus 3 more meanings "in order to- so that and for ", in this sentence it was attached to "ik ", whenever its found attached to it, it gives the meaning "for you , for him, for us, for them ... ", not because of you, this is very important as its used all the time with this meaning.
Roland: Interesting, but I am not falling for it, I`m very pleased knowing this one very important meaning for now!
Lesson focus
|
Hala: The focus of this lesson is noun construct, we have an example, (إزازِة مَيَّة ʾizāziẗ mayyah
Roland: that means "a bottle of water "
Hala: In Arabic, the word "of ", doesn't exist , but its replaced by the noun construct, It is a grammar rule, It is not something you can see, or you can put your hands on. we had "a bottle OF water ", bottle is a feminine noun in Arabic, so in order to give the effect of "of ", we pronounced the last letter clearly, it was a "t "
Roland: but generally and when it's not in the noun construct it's pronounced like "a "
Hala: Yes,that is true, and by pronouncing it it gave the "of " meaning, so "izāzit mayyh ", literally, its "bottle water ", the meaning is "a bottle of water ", its found in another example "كباية شاي, kubbāyit šāi ", a glass of tea, how can we say a glass?
Roland: kubbāyah.
Hala: And to say a cup of tea?
Roland: A glass of tea is kubbāyit šāi.
Hala: Again! pronouncing the "t " here give the "of " meaning. It is very simple. It could be a bit tricky. Remember! you will hear it, you will not see it. The word is written the same way. Nothing will change in it.
