INTRODUCTION
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ArabicPod101.com. This is Lower Intermediate, Season 1 Lesson 6 - Planning Your Next Holiday in Egypt. Becky here.
Nora: السلام عليكم. I'm Nora.
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express your wishes, for example, what you pray or hope for. This conversation takes place over the phone. After Saleem gets permission from his boss to take a vacation, he is excited to tell his wife the good news.
Nora: It's between Saleem and Noor.
Becky: The speakers are husband and wife, so they’ll be using informal Egyptian Arabic. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

Becky: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Saleem: Honey, good news! The boss gave me permission to go on a vacation after this project.
Noor: Wonderful, finally! You work so hard. Where would you go on your dream trip?
Saleem: I've always wanted to visit New York City, but it’s too cold in the winter. I know you love warm weather... maybe we could...
Noor: (interrupts) the beach! Can we please go to a place with a beach? I dream of swimming in the sea and feeling my feet in the sand.
Saleem: Yes, we can plan your dream trip to the beach. We’ll stay at a hotel on the beach and relax by the ocean every day.
Noor: I really want to go on this trip. I will call the travel agent office tomorrow!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: Nora, I hear there are great beaches in the Arab world.
Nora: Right, some of the best beach vacation destinations in the world are located in the Middle East and North Africa.
Becky: But are there certain rules you need to know when you visit there?
Nora: Well, rules and norms vary widely depending on your destination, but in general, women and men enjoy co-ed public beaches in the same ways tourists enjoy beaches in the Western world.
Becky: Good to know!
Nora: One noticeable difference might be the types of bathing suit styles you see, particularly for women. Some Arab women might wear modest bathing suits that cover their bodies and heads, similar to their traditional clothing, but other Arab women might wear two-piece bathing suits!
Becky: So we should be prepared to see bathing attire that represent all levels of modesty.
Nora: Definitely! Conservative dress is usually not expected of non-locals, and the same beach attire you would wear anywhere else in the world is usually acceptable.
Becky: But I've heard that in some places bikinis are prohibited, is that true?
Nora: Yes, in some places it might be less common for women to wear western-style bikinis and bathing suits, though usually men will be fine in just shorts. Just be sure to do your research when you’re planning a trip to a beach location. And always pack a cover-up that you can swim in, like a t-shirt and loose pants, in case you end up in a place where other women seem to be more conservatively dressed.
Becky: That’s a good tip, listeners!

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Nora: المدير
Becky: meaning "the manager,” or “the boss."
Nora: You can use this term in conversation to refer to the boss, manager, director, or anyone in a superior professional position. You wouldn't usually use it if you're speaking to the manager directly. If you’re talking to a manager, you would say ustaaz and their name.
Becky: Can you give us an example using this word?
Nora: Sure. For example, you can say..
المُدير بيسأل عالريبورت.
Becky: ..which means "The manager is asking about the report."
Becky: Okay, what's the next word?
Nora: اجازة
Becky: meaning "vacation." Listeners, note that while this word refers to any getaway, it’s not used to refer to something like a national holiday where offices are closed.
Nora: Right, it’s used to refer to a special trip or vacation during a holiday or otherwise.
Becky: Can you give us an example using this word?
Nora: Sure. For example, you can say..
السنة اللي فاتت رحنا اسكندرية في الأَجازَة.
Becky: .. which means "Last year we went to Alexandria for vacation." Okay, what's the next word?
Nora: مشروع
Becky: meaning "project."
Nora: This word comes from the root شرع, which means "to set about" or "to proceed" in its verb form.
Becky: That makes sense because a project is something that you set about to complete.
Nora: It can be used to refer to any project or undertaking in business, school, or otherwise.
Becky: Can you give us an example using this word?
Nora: Sure. For example, you can say..
المشروع هينجح إن شاء الله.
Becky: .. which means "The project will succeed." Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn how to express wishes and plans for the future.
Nora: To describe something you wish for, or more specifically, dream of, use the verb حلم, which means “to dream.”
Becky: Could you give us an example?
Nora: أنا بحلم إني أروح إسكندرية
Becky: Which means, "I dream of going to Alexandria." Talking about a dream or wish requires a sentence with two parts.
Nora: In the first part, you state "I dream of," or انا بحلم ان. In the second part of the sentence you can attach an action statement in the present tense,
Becky: ... for example to say something like, "I dream of swimming in the ocean." like the sentence in the dialogue.
Nora: أنا بحلم إني أعوم في البحر
Here’s a different example,
أنا بحلم إني أسافر لندن.
Becky: which means "I dream of traveling to London."
Nora: So to summarize, in the first part of the sentence, you can use the verb "to dream" in the present tense by using ب plus حلم or you can conjugate it in the past tense.
Becky: In the past tense, it describes a literal dream you had.
Nora: That’s right. Just drop the ب and conjugate in the past tense, حلمت. by putting a ت after the last letter. For example,
حلمت أني عايشة في قصر
Becky: which means, "I had a dream that I was living in a palace." This rule is very simple! To wrap up, let’s give a couple of more examples.
Nora: Here’s one,
.أنا بحلم إني أسافر اليابان
Becky: "I dream of traveling to Japan."
Nora: Another is...
.حلمت أني عايشة في نيويورك
Becky: "I dreamt that I was living in New York."

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Nora: مع السلامة
