Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask the question, "When is your birthday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask and answer about the date of an event.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
عيد ميلادك إمتى؟
(ʿīd mīlādek ʾemtā?)
أربعة مارس.
(ʾarbaʿah māres.)
Once more with the English translation.
عيد ميلادك إمتى؟
(ʿīd mīlādek ʾemtā?)
“When is your birthday?”
أربعة مارس.
(ʾarbaʿah māres.)
“It's on March 4th.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say "When is [event]?"
The pattern is:
[event] إمتى؟
([event] ʾemtā?)
This Arabic sentence literally translates as "[event] when?" But it means “When is [event]?”.
For example:
"When is your birthday?"
عيد ميلادك إمتى؟, عيد ميلادك إمتى؟
(ʿīd mīlādek ʾemtā?, ʿīd mīlādek ʾemtā?)
Now, how do you answer this question?
أربعة مارس.
(ʾarbaʿah māres.)
“It's on March 4th.”
Listen to it again:
أربعة مارس., أربعة مارس.
(ʾarbaʿah māres., ʾarbaʿah māres.)
This Arabic sentence translates as "Four March." But it means “It's on March 4th.”.
