Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you doing during the holiday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to talk about your holiday plans.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
هتعمل إيه في شم النسيم؟
(hateʿmel ʾeīh fī šamm el-nesīm?)
ناوي أسافر السخنة.
(nāwī ʾasāfer el-soḫnah.)
Once more with the English translation.
هتعمل إيه في شم النسيم؟
(hateʿmel ʾeīh fī šamm el-nesīm?)
“What are you doing for Spring Festival?”
ناوي أسافر السخنة.
(nāwī ʾasāfer el-soḫnah.)
“I'm planning to travel to Sokhna.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you doing for Spring Festival?”
That's:
هتعمل إيه في شم النسيم؟
(hateʿmel ʾeīh fī šamm el-nesīm?)
The Spring Festival celebrates the beginning of spring.
Listen to it again:
هتعمل إيه في شم النسيم؟, هتعمل إيه في شم النسيم؟
(hateʿmel ʾeīh fī šamm el-nesīm?, hateʿmel ʾeīh fī šamm el-nesīm?)
This Arabic sentence literally translate as “You will do what in Spring Festival?” But it means “What are you doing for Spring Festival?”.
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
ناوي [plan].
(nāwī [plan].)
This Arabic sentence translates as "Planning [plan]." But it means "I’m planning to [plan]."
For example:
“I'm planning to travel to Sokhna.”
ناوي أسافر السخنة., ناوي أسافر السخنة.
(nāwī ʾasāfer el-soḫnah., nāwī ʾasāfer el-soḫnah.)
