Hi everyone. My name is Peryhan and this is Arabic top words. Today’s top words are going to be about 15 Must Know Family Words. So let’s get started.
1.
عيلة
(ʿeīlah) “Family”
The first word about family words is the word “Family”
Surprise! So Family means,
عيلة
(ʿeīlah)
For example, you can say,
العيلة بتتقابل يوم الخميس.
(el-ʿeīlah betetʾābel yūm el-ḫamīs.)
“The family gathers on Thursdays.”
Usually, in Egypt, it’s quite traditional to meet up with your family on Fridays because it’s the first day of the weekend.
The family meets up on Fridays.
2.
أب
(ʾabb) “Father”
For example, you can say,
نصيحة الأب مهمة جدا.
(naṣīḥeẗ el-ʾabb mohemmah geddan.)
“A father’s advice is so important.”
My father always likes to advise me not to study too much or he always says, don’t force yourself on studying because if you do, you will just not be able to understand or take in anything anymore.
So he always tells me like don’t study too much. Don’t study too hard.
So I really appreciate this advice like not to – what is the word?
“Don’t exhaust yourself in something.”
Yeah. That’s very good advice I got from my dad.
3.
زوج
(zūg ) “Husband”
For example,
في مصر، الزوج المفروض يصرف على البيت.
(fī maṣr, el-zūǧ el-mafrūḍ yeṣref ʿalā el-bīt.)
“In Egypt, the husband should spend on the house.”
This is quite sexist.
4.
ابن
(ʾebn) “Son”
For example, you can say,
ابنها هيتجوز الأسبوع الجاي
(ebnahā hayetǧawwez el-ʾusbūʿ el-ǧāī.)
“Her son is getting married next week.”
5.
أخ
(ʾaḫḫ) “Brother”
For example, you can say,
أخويا دخل الجامعة.
(ʾaḫūyā daḫal el-gāmʿah.)
“My brother joined university.”
I don’t have a brother.
6.
عم
(ʿamm) “Uncle”
For example, you can say,
عمي هيسافر بكرة.
(ʿammī haysāfer bokrah.)
“My uncle is traveling tomorrow.”
We have this saying. It’s called
أنا وأخويا على ابن عمي و أنا و ابن عمي على الغريب
(ʾanā wa ʾaḫūīā ʿalā ebn ʿammī wa ʾanā wa ebn ʿammī ʿalā el-ġarīb.)
It means, me and my brother would go against my cousin and me and my cousin would go against the stranger.
(“My brother and I would unite against my cousin, but my cousin and I would unite against an outsider.”)
7.
جد
(gedd) “Grandfather”
For example, you can say,
جدتي مسلية جدا.
(geddetī mosalleyyah geddan.)
“My grandfather is 70 years old.”
I don’t have a grandfather.
8.
حمى
(ḥamā) “Father-in-law”
For example,
حمايا طيب أوي.
(ḥamāyā ṭayyeb ʾawī.)
“My father-in-law is very kind.”
I don’t have a father-in-law either. Not yet.
9.
أم
(ʾomm) “Mother”
For example, you can say,
الأم صاحبة بنتها.
(el-ʾomm ṣāḥbeẗ bentahā.)
“The mother is her daughter’s friend”
Or you can say,
في مصر، بنحتفل بعيد الأم يوم 21 مارس
(fī maṣr, bneḥtefel bʿīd el-ʾum yuūm 21 māres)
“In Egypt, we celebrate mother’s day on the 21st of March.”
10.
بنت
(bent) “Daughter”
For example, you can say,
بنته جميلة أوي.
(bentoh gamīlah ʾawī.)
“His daughter is so pretty.”
بنت
(bent) could also mean girl.
So for example, you can say,
البنت دي شكلها تايه.
(elbent dī šaklahā tāyeh.)
“This girl looks like she is lost.”
11.
أُخت
(ʾoḫt) “Sister”
For example,
أختي أكبر مني بسنتين.
(ʾoḫtī ʾakbar mennī besanateīn.)
“My sister is two years older than me.”
But actually, my sister is two years younger than me.
So for example, you can say,
أختي أصغر مني بسنتين.
(ʾuḫtī ʾaṣġar mennī bsanatīn.)
12.
زوجة
(zūgah) “Wife”
For example,
الزوجة المفروض تكون عاقلة.
(el-zūgah el-mafrūḍ tekūn ʿāʾlah.)
“A wife should be wise.”
Generally, anyone should be wise.
13.
حماه
(ḥamāh) “Mother-in-law”
For example,
حماتي تعبانة شوية.
(ḥamātī taʿbānah šwayyah.)
“My mother-in-law is a bit sick.”
14.
جدة
(geddah) “Grandmother”
Or in Egypt, sometimes we say,
تيتا
(teta), it means a nanny.
For example, you can say,
جدتي دايما بتأكلني.
(ǧeddetī dāīman betʾakkelnī.)
Or
تيتا دايما بتأكلني.
(teta dāīman betʾakkelnī.)
“My grandmother always feeds me.”
15.
خال
(ḫāl) “Uncle”
But usually, you use
خال
(ḫāl) to refer to the mother’s brother.
So it’s the uncle on the mother’s side.
For example, you can say
خالي صغير في السن.
(ḫālī ṣoġayyar fī el-senn.)
“My uncle is young.”
