POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Judith: I think this call for a little cultural point about calling the Arab world. How would you go about that if you wanted to call someone say in Oman or something?
Natasha: When making international calls, there’s several additional numbers you have to dial to redirect your call. First you have to dial a number to send your call out of your country.
Judith: In America, you dial 011 for this. And from Middle Eastern countries, you dial 00. Next, you have to dial the country code of the country you’re trying to call.
Natasha: For example, Saudi Arabia is 966, Syria is 963 and Jordan is 962. Now, that you’ve dial into the country, you have to dial an area code and finally the local number.
Judith: Calling a number in Oman from the United States will then require 14 digits. For example, 011 to get out of the country, 962 to get into Jordan, then six as the area code for Oman and then the local number. Something like 3457810 or so.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Natasha: The first word we’ll look at is هاتِفِها
Judith: It means “her phone.”
Natasha: هاتِفِها is “her phone,” while هاتِفِها is just “phone.” This is another example of Arabic possessives. Adding -ha to mean “her.” Time is approaching, we will look at these endings in detail.
Judith: ٲعرفُ is “I know” with an additional “T” in front it becomes “you know.”
Natasha: ٲلا تَعرفُ
Judith: “Do you know?”
GRAMMAR POINT
Judith: The focus of this lesson are the numbers from 0 to 9.
Natasha: It’s essential to know the Arabic numbers zero to nine. They’re used in so many places, not just to tell someone your phone number or house number, but also to talk about time, date, prices and quantities.
Judith: In Arabic, an additional difficulty is that the way the numbers are written is different from ours. So you have to learn this along with the Arabic alphabet.
Natasha: For now, let’s hear the Arabic numbers. We will start with zero because the number zero is important for sharing phone numbers.
Natasha: صفر
Judith: Zero.
Natasha: واحد
