Becky: Welcome to 3-Minute Moroccan Arabic Season 1, Lesson 5 - Apologizing. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to apologize and say that you didn't do something on purpose in Moroccan Arabic.

Becky: Here's the way to say 'Excuse me.' in Moroccan Arabic.
Khalil: [Normal] سمح لي(smaH liyya)
Becky: This expression means 'excuse me.'
Khalil: [Normal] سمح لي [Slow] سمح لي (smaH liyya)
Becky: Listen again to the word meaning 'Excuse me.'
Khalil: [Slow] سمح لي [Normal] سمح لي
Becky: Ok, now let's take a look at the way to say 'Excuse me. (to a female)'
Khalil: [Normal] سمحي لي(smHî liyya)
Becky: This expression means 'excuse me'
Khalil: [Normal] سمحي لي [Slow] سمحي لي (smHî liyya)
Becky: Listen again to the word meaning 'Excuse me. (to a female)'
Khalil: [Slow] سمحي لي [Normal] سمحي لي
Becky: Next up is the way to say 'I didn't mean to do it.'
Khalil: [Normal] ما درتهاش بلعاني. (mâ drthâsh bl‘ânî.)
Becky: First is a word meaning 'didn’t do it'
Khalil: [Normal] ما درتهاش [Slow] ما درتهاش(mâ drthâsh)
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'on purpose'

Becky: Listen again to the phrase meaning 'I didn't mean to do it.'

Becky: Finally, here is a way to say 'I'm terribly sorry.'
Khalil: [Normal] سمح لي بزاف(smaH liyya bzzâf)
Becky: First is a phrase meaning 'I'm sorry'
Khalil: [Normal] سمح لي [Slow] سمح لي(smaH liyya)
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'a lot'
Khalil: [Normal] بزاف [Slow] بزاف(bzzâf)
Becky: Listen again to the phrase meaning 'I'm terribly sorry.'
Khalil: [Slow] سمح لي بزاف [Normal] سمح لي بزاف
Cultural Insight

Khalil: Like in English, the expression for “excuse me” can also be useful in other situations. For example, if you want to grab someone's attention, like to ask a person on the streets for information, you can call on the person by saying smaH liyya before going on with the conversation.
