Becky: Here's the way to ask 'Can you speak English?' in Egyptian Arabic.
Nora: [Normal] بتعرف تتكلم إنجليزي؟(bteʿraf tetkallem ʾenǧlīzī?)
Becky: First is a word meaning 'can you'
Nora: [Normal] بتعرف [Slow] بتعرف (bteʿraf)
Becky: Next is the word meaning 'speak'
Nora: [Normal] تتكلم [Slow] تتكلم(tetkallem)
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'English'
Nora: [Normal] إنجليزي [Slow] إنجليزي(ʾenǧlīzī)
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning 'Can you speak English?'
