What is it?

Postby triplexity » July 1st, 2018 6:28 pm

Hi,
I've been watching some live music videos in Arabic and I hear the singers often say something that sounds like "ashou", maybe "hashou".
Sometimes it suits where "thank you" could be used, but sometimes it seems to have the same meaning as "yalla". So I wonder what exactly does this word mean.

Another thing, I'm having a hard time to read the second part here:

If I get it right, the first part says لا إله إلا الله, but what goes after that?

If anyone can help that would be much appreciated!

Hi Triplexity,

Could you send me one of the songs you heard and at what minute/second exactly you heard that word? I can't seem to guess.

As for the carving, I can't seem to read the second part either. I'll try to ask a calligrapher.

Hi Nora,
Thanks for your reply.
Here's a video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kqiw_H_sPEM

At 2:19, 3:36, 4:55, 6:18, 7:18 the singer says "ashou", which can be interpreted as "come on", but at 8:40, while responding to the praises from the audience, where "thank you" could have been expected, he also says "ashou".

Could be that the second part says ابراهيم خليل الله‬‎ ?

I listened to the song (which is beautiful by the way! I don't understand it fully because some words are specific to gulf dialects) and I think he says 'aashou
meaning "may they live".

In gulf dialects, some people use the word 'isht meaning may you live to mean thank you or bless you. I'm guessing this is a variation in the third person form.
