INTRODUCTION
Alisha: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Arabic learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Alisha: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""How old are you?"" In Arabic this is
Carole: كم عمرك؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is
Carole: كم
Alisha: ""meaning how much"" in English.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) كم
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Carole: كم
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Carole: عمرك
Alisha: meaning your age.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) عمرك
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: عمرك

Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Carole: كم عمرك

★ Note that this is how you ask “How old are you?” if you are asking a male person. If you are asking a female person, you would say:
Carole: كم عمرك؟
Alisha: Please repeat.

Carole: ثمانية عشر عاما
Alisha: ""I'm 18 years old.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Carole: ثمانية عشر
Alisha: means 18.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) ثمانية عشر
Alisha: Now repeat
Carole: ثمانية عشر
{Pause}
Alisha: Next is
Carole: عاما
meaning years.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) عاما
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: عاما
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the speaker say, I'm 18 years old., and then repeat.
Carole: ثمانية عشر عاما
{pause}
Alisha: To make another phrase, replace 18 with 17.
Carole: سبعة عشر
Alisha: 17
Carole: (slow) سبعة عشر (regular) سبعة عشر
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 17
Carole: سبعة عشر عاما
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 18. Say I'm 17 years old.

Carole: سبعة عشر عاما
Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace 17 with 20.
Carole: عشرون
Alisha: 20
Carole: (slow) عشرون (regular) عشرون
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 20
Carole: عشرون عاما
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 17. Say I'm 20 years old.

Alisha: You want to ask someone how old they are. Ask the masculine version of the question.
