INTRODUCTION
Alisha: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Arabic learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Alisha: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""How is it? (when talking about food)"" In Arabic this is
Carole: هل يعجبك؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is
Carole: هل
Alisha: ""meaning do"" in English.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) هل
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Carole: هل
{Pause}
Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Carole: يعجبك
Alisha: meaning you like (it).
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) يعجبك
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: يعجبك
{Pause}
Alisha: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Carole: هل يعجبك

★ Note that this is how you ask “How is it (when talking about food?” if you are asking a male person. If you are asking a female person, you would say:
Carole: هل يعجبك
Alisha: Please repeat.
Carole: هل يعجبك

Alisha: Master the following pattern and responses to the question How is it? (food)?
Carole: إنه لذيذ
Alisha: ""It's delicious. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

Alisha: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Carole: إنه
Alisha: meaning It's.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) إنه
Alisha: Now repeat
Carole: إنه

Alisha: And after that
Carole: لذيذ
meaning delicious.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) لذيذ
Alisha: Now repeat.
Carole: لذيذ

Alisha: Listen to the speaker say, It's delicious, and then repeat.
Carole: إنه لذيذ

Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace delicious with excellent.
Carole: ممتاز
Alisha: excellent
Carole: (slow) ممتاز (regular) ممتاز
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with excellent
Carole: إنه ممتاز
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace delicious. Say It's excellent

Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace excellent with good.
Carole: طيب
Alisha: good
Carole: (slow) طيب (regular) طيب
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with good
Carole: إنه طيب
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “excellent”. Say It's good

Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace good with Okay.

Alisha: Okay

Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with Okay

Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “good”. Say It's Okay

Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Egypt and someone asks you your opinion on the food you're eating. You want to say it's delicious. Respond to the question.
Carole: هل يعجبك؟ (five seconds) إنه لذيذ
Alisha: Now, you want to say it's excellent Respond to the question.
Carole: هل يعجبك؟ (five seconds) إنه ممتاز
Alisha: you want to say it's good. Answer the speaker's question.
Carole: هل يعجبك؟ (five seconds) إنه طيب
Alisha: You want to say it's Okay. Respond to the question.
Carole: هل يعجبك؟ (five seconds) إنه عادي
Alisha: Now you want to know what that person thinks of the meal. Ask the masculine version of the question.
