Lesson Transcript

In this lesson we're going to take a trip to the post office. The post office is al bosta.
(slow) al bosta.
al bosta.
البوستة
We're going to work on getting your postcards, letters, and packages home. The key expression is "I want to send this to..." plus the desired destination. We'll use France as our destination. In Egyptian Arabic, “I want to send this to France" is:
‘ayez ab’at dah le Faransa.
Let’s break it down:
(slow). ‘ayez ab’at dah le faransa
Once more:
‘ayez ab’at dah le faransa.
عايز أَبعت دَه لفرنسا
The first word,’ayez, is translated as “I want”
(slow) ‘ayez.
‘ayez.
Next we have ab’at, which is the verb “to send” in the first person.
(slow) ab’at.
ab’at.
Then we have dah, which means “this”.
(slow) dah.
dah.
Next is “le”. It can be translated as “to”.
(slow) le.
le.
And at the end comes the country name, in our case France.
(slow) faransa.
faransa.
All together, we have
(slow)’ayez ab’at dah le faransa.
’ayez ab’at dah le faransa.
This means “I want to send this to France.”
Let's look at the other words. We were talking about packages, letters, and postcards, so let’s try to send a postcard!
“Postcard” in Arabic is kart bariidi.
(slow) kart bariidi.
kart bariidi.
كارت بريدي
This phrase means post card but usually in Egypt we shorten the phrase to just card, kart.
“I want to send this postcard to France” in Arabic is
‘ayez ab’at al kart dah le faransa.
Let’s break it down:
(slow)’ayez ab’at al kart dah le faransa.
Once more:
’ayez ab’at al kart dah le faransa.
عايز أبعت الكارت دَه لفرنسا
al kart dah means "this card.".
(slow) al kart dah.
al kart dah.
Simply replace the word dah in the first sentence with al kart dah to get:
’ayez ab’at al kart dah le faransa.
Now let’s try “letter”, which in Egyptian is “gawaab”.
(slow) gawaab.
gawaab.
“This letter” is:
(slow) al gawaab dah.
al gawaab dah.
All together it is:
“I want to send this letter to France” or
‘ayez ab’at al gawaab dah le faransa.
(slow) ‘ayez ab’at al gawaab dah le faransa.
عايز أبعت الجواب ده لفرنسا
Let’s hear the whole phrase one more time:
‘ayez ab’at al gawaab dah le faransa.
Now let’s try to send a package. In Egyptian, “I want to send this package to France” is:
‘ayez ab’at al tard dah le faransa.
(slow) ‘ayez ab’at al tard dah le faransa.
“Package” in Egyptian is al tard.
(slow) al tard.
al tard.
Let’s hear the phrase altogether!
‘ayez ab’at al tard dah le faransa.
عايز أَبعت الطَرد دَه لفرنسا
Now the contents of the package require a closer look, which we’ll address in the next lesson.
