In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to a crucial phrase for all of you travelers out there who are interested in learning more about the tourist attractions you're going to visit. Learning about the history and cultural significance of places you visit can be just as rewarding as seeing them.
Today, we'll cover, "Do you have an English information guide?"
In Arabic, "Do you have an English information guide?" is ʿandukm al-ddّalīl al-ʾiʿlāmiī bilʾinǧilīzyyah?(عندكم الدليل الإعلامي بالإنجليزية؟)
ʿandukm al-ddّalīl al-ʾiʿlāmiī bilʾinǧilīzyyah?
Now, let’s break it down by syllable: ʿandukm al-ddّalīl al-ʾiʿlāmiī bilʾinǧilīzyyah?
"Do you have an English information guide?" is ʿandukm al-ddّalīl al-ʾiʿlāmiī bilʾinǧilīzyyah?
The first word, ʿandukm (عندكم), means "do you have"

And this is followed by al-ddّalīl, which in Arabic is "guide"
al-ddّalīl
al-ddّalīl
This is followed by al-ʾiʿlāmiī, which means “informative”
al-ʾiʿlāmiī
al-ʾiʿlāmiī
So to recap here, we have: ʿandukm al-ddّalīl al-ʾiʿlāmiī
And literally, this means “do you have the guide informative”
Let’s take a look at the next: b, which means “in”

This is followed by ilʾinǧilīzyyah, which means "English."
Let's hear it once again: ilʾinǧilīzyyah

So altogether, we have: ʿandukm al-ddّalīl al-ʾiʿlāmiī bilʾinǧilīzyyah?
And literally, this means “do you have the guide informative in English” or "do you have an English information guide?"
Now, to ask for a different language, we can just replace the word for "English" with any other word for a language and it works just fine.
Let's try French.
In Arabic, "Do you have a French information guide?" is ʿandkum al-ddalīl al-ʾiʿlāmī bilfransyyah? (عندكم الدليل الإعلامي بالفرنسية؟)
ʿandkum al-ddalīl al-ʾiʿlāmī bilfransyyah?
The only thing that changes really is the thing you’re looking for. In this case, it’s ilfransyyah.

Cultural Insights
You can use this phrase at a museum or any other tourist attraction. It's likely you’ll find information guides in French, Spanish, and English. Asian languages are not popular and the chances that you’ll find a guide in Japanese or Chinese are very very rare.
