Alisha: Practical Expressions That Should not be Taken Literally
Alisha: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ArabicPod101.com. I'm Alisha.

Alisha: This is Must-Know Egyptian Arabic Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 24. In this lesson you'll learn practical expressions that should not be taken literally.
Alisha: These expressions are very practical but are not to be taken literally, because they have very different meanings as slang expressions.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Alisha: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Sherif: .خد الباب في إيدك (ḫud el-bāb fī ʾeīdak.)
Sherif: يطحن نفسه (yeṭḥan nafsoh)
Sherif: يدوس (yedūs)
Sherif: عاش (ʿāš)
Alisha: Sherif, what's our first expression?
Sherif: .خد الباب في إيدك (ḫud el-bāb fī ʾeīdak.)
Alisha: literally meaning "Take the door in your hands." Imagine someone carrying the whole door and leaving the room with it! But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "Close the door on your way out."
Sherif: [SLOW] .خد الباب في إيدك [NORMAL] .خد الباب في إيدك

Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want someone to close the door after going out. Be careful when you use this word, elderly people might feel offended.

Alisha: literally meaning "to grind oneself." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to work hard."

Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to say that you worked or studied extremely hard.

Alisha: "Magdi works very hard before the exam."

Alisha: Okay, what's our next expression?
Sherif: يدوس (yedūs)
Alisha: literally meaning "to press." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to start or join in an activity."
Sherif: [SLOW] يدوس [NORMAL] يدوس

Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to say that someone will start to do something. You can also use it to express that someone will join someone else in a certain activity.

Alisha: "He got an offer from a big company, I told him, of course, he should start with them."

Alisha: Okay, what's the last expression?
Sherif: عاش (ʿāš)
Alisha: literally meaning "lived." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "well done."
Sherif: [SLOW] عاش [NORMAL] عاش

Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to praise someone for something they did.
