Hi its Chaima again, welcome to Arabic weekly words and let’s find out this week’s topic. Its office, office [المكتب (al maktab)] or in Darija [المكتب (lmaktab)] same word, just pronounced differently again.

First word is

[الساعات الاضافية]

[ssâ‘ât l’iDâfiyya] overtime

بزاف ت الناس ما كيعجبهمش يديرو الساعا ت

الاضافية

[bzzâf t nnâs mâ kay‘jabhumsh ydîrû ssâʻât l’iDâfiyya.]

So many people don’t like to do overtime which is a fact, it’s true.

Next word

[تقاعد]

[tqâ‘ad] it’s to retire and

in Darija, we say [tqâ‘ad] it’s the same word

فاش الوالد ديالها تقاعد ولى كيمارس الرياض ة

و كيتفرج ف التلفزة بزاف

[fâsh lwâlid dyâlhâ tqâʻd wllâ kaymârs rriyâDa wkaytfarraj f ttalfaza bzzâf.]

when her father retired, he started exercising and watching TV a lot.

[إجتما ع] meeting.

[’ijtimâ‘]

The same word in Darija is ʾiǧtimāʿ, ’ijtimâ‘

هاد الصباح ف الإجتماع اتخدنا بزاف ت

القرارات المهمة للشركة ديالنا

[hâd SSbâH f l’ijtimâʻ ttakhadnâ bzzâf t lqarârât lmuhimma lishsharika dyâlnâ. ]

This morning in the meeting, we made really important decisions for our company.

شركة

company [sharika] same word in Darija, we say

أپل شركة كبيرة ديال الكمپيوترات

[’appl sharika kbîra dyâl lkumpyûtrât.]

Apple is a big company for computers.

Another word is

[مكتب]

[maktab] is office.

Yeah and we say also the same word in Darija. A good sentence with this word would be

كل صباح كيمشي للمكتب ديالو مع الثمانية و

ما كيخرج حتى الربعة

[kulla SbâH kaymshî lilmaktab dyâlû mʻa tthmânya w mâ kayukhruj Httâ lrbʻa. ]

Every morning, he goes to his office at 8 and he leaves at – yeah that was it.
