Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you good at?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to talk about what you’re good at doing.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
انت شاطرة في إيه؟
(enti šāṭrah fī ʾeīh?)
أنا شاطرة في اللغات.
(ʾanā šāṭrah fī el-loġāt.)
Once more with the English translation.
انت شاطرة في إيه؟
(enti šāṭrah fī ʾeīh?)
“What are you good at?”
أنا شاطرة في اللغات.
(ʾanā šāṭrah fī el-loġāt.)
“I'm good at languages.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you good at?”
That's:
انت شاطرة في إيه؟
(enti šāṭrah fī ʾeīh?)
Listen to it again:
انت شاطرة في إيه؟, انت شاطرة في إيه؟
(enti šāṭrah fī ʾeīh?, enti šāṭrah fī ʾeīh?)
This Arabic sentence literally translates as “You good at what?” But it means “What are you good at?”.
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
أنا شاطر في [skill]. / أنا شاطرة في [skill].
(ʾanā šāṭer fī [skill]. / ʾanā šāṭrah fī [skill].)
“I'm good at [skill].”
For example:
“I'm good at languages.”
أنا شاطرة في اللغات., أنا شاطرة في اللغات.
(ʾanā šāṭrah fī el-loġāt., ʾanā šāṭrah fī el-loġāt.)
