Hi everyone. My name is Peryhan and this is ArabicPod101. Today, we are going to do 15 favorite words chosen by fans. You.
15 Favorite Words (Chosen by Fans)
1.
أهلاً
(ahlan) “Welcome”
For example, you can say,
أهلاً. إزيك؟
(ʾahlan. ʾezzayyak?) “Hi welcome, how are you?”
It’s so easy.
2.
شكرا
(šukran) “Thank you”
For example,
شكراً على الدعوة.
(šokran ʿala-ddaʿwah) “Thank you for the invitation.”
3.
جميل
(gamīl) “Nice” or “beautiful”
جميل
(gamīl), it means “nice” or “beautiful”.
For example, you can say
بيتهم شكله جميل.
(bīthum šakluh ǧamīl.) “Their house is very nice.”
Or you can say,
البنت دي جميلة.
(elbent dī ǧamīlah.) “This girl is very beautiful.”

قطة
(oṭṭah) “Cat”
For example,
عندي قطة سيامي.
(ʿandī ʾoṭṭah syāmī.) “I have a Siamese cat.”
I wish I could have a cat. Ehh..

مبسوط
(mabsūṭ) “Happy”
هدفي هو أني أكون مبسوط.
(Hadafī howwa ʾennī ʾakūn mabsūṭ.) “I am happy to see you.” You!

أم
(omm) “Mother”
For example,
كل أم بتتمنى الخير لأولادها.
(koll ʾomm betetmannā el-ḫeīr leʾawlādhā.) “Every mother wishes the best for her children.” That’s true.

مشهور
(mašhūr) “Popular”
المغني ده مشهور جداً.
(elmuġannī dah mašhūr ǧeddan.) “This singer is very popular.”
For example,
عمرو دياب مشهور جداً.
(ʿamr dyāb mašhūr ǧeddan.) “Amr Diab is very popular.”

رائع
(rāʾeʿ) “Amazing”
So for example, you can say
المهرجان كان رائع.
(elmahraǧān kān rāʾeʿ), which means, “The festival was amazing.”
9.
يحترم
(yeḥterem) “To respect”
For example,
الصغير لازم يحترم الكبير.
(el-ṣoġayyar lāzem yeḥterem el-kebīr.)
“The young should always respect the elder.”
10.
سنجاب
(sengāb) “Squirrel”
أنا عمري ما شفت سنجاب.
(ʾanā ʿomrī mā šoft sengāb.) “I’ve never seen a squirrel.” That’s true.
11.
ماشي
(māšī) “Okay” It means, okay.
For example, you can say,
ماشي, تعالى نتقابل الساعة سابعة.
(māšī, taʿālā netʾābel el-sāʿah sābʿah.), which means, “Okay, let’s meet at 7 O’ clock.”
And fun fact. Usually, young people in Egypt don’t just use the word (māšī) but they also use the word
قشطة
(ʾešṭah), it means “cream” but we also use it as the word
ماشي
(māšī)
And you can use this word to sound a little more the native-like or if you have lots of Egyptian friends, you will find them using it a lot.

عيلة
(eīlah) “Family”
For example, you can say
بحب عيلتي جداً.
(baḥeb ʿīltī ǧeddan.) “I love my family very much.”
13.
حبيبي
(ḥabībī) “My love”
The next word is probably a word you all know or get to know or learn when you first start Arabic, it’s Habibi which means my love. We usually use it not only in a romantic way but we also use it as a friendly or endearment kind of term. So you can say Habibi to anyone.
For example, “Okay, Habibi”
ماشي حبيبي
(māšī ḥabībī)
14.
أخت
(oḫt) “Sister”
أنا عندي أخت واحدة أصغر مني.
(ʾanā ʿandī ʾuḫt wāḥdah ʾaṣġar mennī.) “I have one younger sister.”
15.
سعادة
(saʿādah) “Happiness”
For example, you can say
السعادة هدف كل إنسان.
(el-saʿādah hadaf koll ʾensān.) “Happiness is everyone’s goal.”
