Lesson Transcript

Hi, everyone! My name is Peryhan and this is Arabic Top Words. Today’s topic is going to be about math words. Of all the words we need to know, we’re going to do math because it’s so important. We first need to know how to say math in Arabic.
1.
الرياضيات
(el-reyāḍeyyāt)
"math"
or
الحساب
(ālḥesāb).
الحساب
(ālḥesāb)
is for the intermediate or beginner-level math and
الرياضيات
(el-reyāḍeyyāt)
is the advanced.
بحب الرياضيات.
(baḥebb el-reyāḍeyyāt.)
"I like Math."
or
بكره الرياضيات.
(bakrah el-reyaāḍeyyaāt.)
“I hate Math.”
I think that most people would go into the latter.
Another word you need to know about math is...
2.
رقم
(raqam)
"number"
رقم
(raqam)
"number / digit"
For example...
الرقم ده كبير أوي.
(el-raqam dah kebīr ʾawī.)
"This number is very big."
or
الرقم ده صغير أوي.
(ālra’am dah ṣoġayyar ’ aweī.)
“This number is very small.”
3.
نص
(noṣṣ)
"half"
For example -
عايز نص رغيف عيش.
(ʿāyez noṣṣ reġīf ʿeīš.)
"I want half a loaf of bread."
Usually in Egypt, if you go to buy groceries, if you go to buy vegetables or fruits, we usually sell in kilos so if you want 500 grams, if you want half a kilo, you would say -
عايز نص كيلو من ده.
(ʿāyez noṣ kīlū men dah.)
“I would like half a kilo of this.”
4.
في المية
(fi el-meyyah)
"percent"
Another word you might need while shopping is -
في المية
(fi el-meyyah)
"percent".
For example
في خصم 30 في المية.
(fī ḫaṣm 30 fī el-meyyah.)
"There's a 30% discount."
5.
زوجي
(zawgī)
"even"
Another word that is related to Math and you might need it is knowing the difference between odd and even numbers. For example -
زوجي
(zawgī)
that would men "even".
The word
زوجي
(zawgī)
in Arabic literally means pair so it’s kind of easy to memorize it
زوجي
(zawgī).
It refers to even numbers. For example - 2, 4, 6, and I’m not so good at math so we’ll stop here.
أربعة رقم زوجي.
(ʾarbaʿah raqam zawgī.)
"Four is an even number."
6.
فردي
(fardī)
"odd"
فردي
(fardī)
it means "odd".
In Arabic
فردي
(fardī)
also means “singular” so that’s easy to memorize. So for example, you can say -
خمسة رقم فردي.
(ḫamsah raqam fardī.)
"Five is an odd number."
7.
زائد
(zāʾid)
"plus"
Okay, now let’s get to calculation. The first word we have is plus so that means
زائد
(zāʾid).
For example -
واحد زائد واحد يساوي اتنين.
(wāḥed zāʾed wāḥed yesāwī etneīn.).
That’s so easy.
واحد زائد واحد يساوي اتنين.
(wāḥed zāʾed wāḥed yesāwī etneīn.)
"One plus one equals two."
8.
ناقص
(nāʾeṣ)
"minus"
For example, it’s getting more difficult -
تلاتة ناقص اتنين يساوي واحد.
(talātah nāʾeṣ etneīn yesāwī wāḥed.)
"Three minus two equals one."
9.
في
(fī)
"times"
For example
اتنين في اتنين بأربعة.
(etneīn fī etneīn beʾarbaʿah.)
"Two times two equals four."
إتنين في تلاتة بستة. إتنين في أربعة بتمانية.
(etnīn fī talātah besettah. ’etnīn fī ’arbah ‘ah betamāneyah.)
إتنين في خمسة بعشرة. إتنين في ستة بإتناشر.
(etnīn fī (ḫamsah be ‘ašarah. ’etnīn fī settah beꞌetnāšar.).
10.
يقسم
(yeʾsem)
"to divide"
For example -
عشان تعرف الإجابة، هتحتاج تقسم الرقم على اتنين.
(ʿašān teʿraf el-ʾegābah, hateḥtāg teʾsem el-raqam ʿalā etneīn.)
"To get the answer, you'll have to divide the number by two."
I wonder what kind of question is that.
The end! That is the only fun math lesson I’ve ever had. So I hope you enjoy this fun math lesson. Bye-bye!
