Hi everyone, I am Peryhan and today we are going to have the top 25 Arabic phrases. So let’s begin! |
1. |
السلام عليكم |
(al-salām ʿalaykum) Hello |
So this is the most basic greeting we have in Arabic. So if you enter anywhere, please say السلام عليكم |
2. |
صباح الخير |
(ṣabāḥ al-ḫayr) Good Morning |
And this is so easy, when you see someone in the morning, just tell them صباح الخير. It sounds cool. |
3. |
مساء الخير |
(masāʾ al-ḫayr) Good afternoon |
That is good afternoon. |
4. |
تصبح على خير |
(tuṣbiḥ ʿalā ḫayr) Goodnight |
That is goodnight. When someone goes to bed, you simply tell them تصبح على خير |
Goodnight. |
5. |
ما إسمك؟ |
(mā ʾismuk?) What’s your name? |
السلام عليكم |
ما إسمك؟ |
(al-salām ʿalaykum) (mā ʾismuk?) Hello, what’s your name? |
6. |
أنا ببرهاز |
(ʾanā bīrihān) I’m Peryhan. |
So in reply, the other person says, أنا (ʾanā) and then their name. |
أنا |
(ʾanā) means “I am” and then they put their name. So |
ما إسمك؟ |
(mā ʾismuk?) what’s your name? |
أنا ببرهاز |
(ʾanā bīrihān) I am Peryhan. |

تشرفنا |
(tašarrafnā) Nice to meet you! |
So now you have a whole conversation. |
ما إسمك؟ |
أنا ببرهاز |
تشرفنا |
(mā ʾismuk?)(ʾanā bīrihān)(tašarrafnā) what’s your name, I am Peryhan, Nice to meet you. |

كيف حالك؟ |
(kaīfa ḥaluka?) How are you? |
How are you doing? |
السلام عليكم |
كيف حالك؟ |
(al-salām ʿalaykum)(kaīfa ḥaluka?) Hello, how are you doing? |
9. |
أنا بخير, شكراً. ماذا عنك؟ |
(ʾanā biḫayr, šukran. māḏā ʿank?) I am fine, thanks. And you? |
And this is the reply to |
السلام عليكم |
كيف حالك؟ |
(al-salām ʿalaykum)(kayfa ḥal-uk?) that is, Hello, how are you? |
And you say |
أنا بخير, شكراً. ماذا عنك؟ |
(ʾanā biḫayr, šukran. māḏā ʿank?) I am fine, thank you. How about you? |

من فضلك |
(min faḍlik) Please |
That means “please”. So you can say |
إجلس من فضلك |
(ʾiǧlis min faḍlik) which means “please sit down”. |

شكراً |
(šukran) Thank you |
شكراً |
(šukran) which means thank you. |
شكراً على الهداي |
(šukran ʿalā al-hadāyā.) Thank you for the present. |

عفواً |
(ʿafwan) You’re welcome |
So from the beginning: |
شكراً على الهداي |
(šukran ʿalā al-hadāyā.) Thank you for the present, and you reply |
عفواً |
(ʿafwan) You’re welcome. |

لا |
(naʿam) Yes |
So for example, you can say: |
شكراً على الهدايا |
(hall turīdu qahwah?) Do you want coffee? and you reply with |
لا |
(naʿam) yes, and you can also add |
من فضلك |
(min faḍlik) please. |
14. |
نعم |
(lā) No |
The opposite of it, |
نعم |
(lā) which means “no”. So one more: |
شكراً على الهدايا |
(hall turīdu qahwah?) Do you want coffee? |
نعم |
(lā) No. And you can say |
شكراً |
(šukran) Thank you. |
15. |
حسناً |
(ḥasanan) Okay. |
.فلنذهب إلى الحديقة |
(falnaḏhab ʾilā al-ḥadīqah.) Let’s go to the park, and you say |
حسناً |
(ḥasanan) Okay. |
16. |
عذراً |
(ʿuḏran) Excuse me |
So for example, you can say |
.عذراً, علي الذهاب |
(ʿuḏran, ʿalaya al-ḏḏahāb.) Which means “Excuse me, I have to go”. |
17. |
أنا آسف |
(ʾanā ʾāsif) I am sorry. |
For example, you can say |
أنا آسف على التأخير. |
(ʾanā ʾāsif ʿalā al-taʾḫiīr.) I am sorry I’m late. |
18. |
كم الساعة؟ |
(kam al-sāʿah?) What time is it? |
You can ask someone |
كم الساعة الآن؟ |
(kam al-ssāʿaẗu al-ʾān?) Which means “what time is it now?” And you can say, it’s 1:30pm, |
.إنها الواحدة و النصف |
(ʾinnahā al-waāḥidah wa al-nnuṣf.) |

أين المرحاض؟ |
(ʾayn al-mirḥāḍ?) Where is the restroom? |
So you can say |
عذراً |
أين المرحاض؟ |
(ʿuḏran) (ʾayn al-mirḥāḍ?) Excuse me, where is the restroom? |
20. |
إنتظر لحظة. |
(ʾintaẓir laḥẓah) Wait a moment! |
عذراً |
إنتظر لحظة. |
(ʿuḏran)(ʾintaẓir laḥẓah) Which means “Excuse me, wait a moment.” |
21. |
بكم هذا؟ |
(bikam haḏā?) How much is this? |
بكم هذا الفستان؟ |
(bikam haḏā al-fustaān) How much is this dress? |
22. |
الحساب لو سمحت. |
(al-ḥisāb law samaḥt.) Could I get the check, please? |
So for example, if you are in a restaurant, you can do this simple hand sign which is like this, and you say |
الحساب لو سمحت. |
(al-ḥisāb law samaḥt.) Could I have the check, please? |
23. |
النجدة |
(al-naǧdah) Help! |
So for example, you can say |
.لقد سرقت حقيبتي |
(laqad suriqat ḥaqībatī!) My bag was stolen! |
النجدة |
(al-naǧdah) Help! |
24. |
أراك لاحقاً |
(ʾarāk lāḥiqan) See you later. |
So when you say goodbye to your friend, you tell him |
.أراك لاحقاً |
(ʾarāk lāḥiqan). And if you are saying goodbye to a group of friends, you say |
.أراكم لاحقاً |
(ʾarākum lāḥiqan.) |
25. |
مع السلامة |
(maʿ al-salāmah) Goodbye |
.أنا ذاهب إلى المنزل, مع السلامة |
(ʾanā ḏāhib ʾilā al-manzil, maʿ al-sslaāmah.) I am going home, goodbye. |
