Natasha: Hello, everyone, Natasha’s here. In the following lesson, you will learn how to talk about a trip.

Judith: Let’s listen to the conversation.

Natasha: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Natasha: الحمد لله على السلامة، خالد! كيف كانت رحلتك؟ هل إستمتعت في دبي؟
Natasha: Welcome back, Khalid. How was your trip? Did you have fun in Dubai?
Judith: كانت رحلة لا بأس بها
Natasha: It was okay.
Natasha:أنت كنت في دبي و تقول عن الرحلة " لا بأس بها "؟
Natasha: You go to Dubai and you say the trip was just okay?
Judith:زرتها في نهاية الأسبوع، يا أمي. كانت رحلة عمل. لم يكن لدي الوقت الكافي لأراها
Natasha: I only visited it for a weekend, mom, and it was a business trip. I did not have enough time to see Dubai.
Natasha:هل أعجبت دبي أحمد؟ ذهبت معه، أليس كذلك؟
Natasha: How did Ahmed like Dubai? You went with him, didn’t you?
Judith: نعم، لقد أحبها. يريد أن يزورها ثانية في الشهر القادم بدوني
Natasha: Yes, he loved it. He wants to visit it again next month without me.
Natasha: أوه
Natasha: Wow.
Judith: جلبت هدية لك
Natasha: I got a present for you.
Natasha: عظيم، شكرا لك
Natasha: Oh, thank you.
Judith: جلبت أيضا هديتين لأبي و أخي
Natasha: I also got something for my father and my brother.
Natasha:ماذا جلبت لهما؟
Natasha: What did you get them?
Judith: إنتظري وسترين
Natasha: Wait and you’ll see.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Judith: Can you tell me something about souvenirs? What would you recommend to get as a souvenir from, say, Dubai?
Natasha: When bringing back a souvenir from an Arab nation, it is important to try to find out something which represents the place you have visited.
Judith: Yeah. In Morocco for example, you could find almost anything in the bazaars at Marrakech. But maybe you want to get a tagine. It will allow you to prepare authentic Moroccan cuisine at home.
Natasha: In Egypt, you may prefer something to remind you of the many ancient monuments. Of course, actual antiques are out of the question, but there are many replicas you can buy.
Judith: In the Gulf, again, you can find almost everything in the United Arab Emirates at a price. But maybe some authentic clothing would be suitable.
Natasha: Of course, you may prefer to buy a Quran, but make sure you treat it with respect. It is offensive to treat it like just another book, and should be very carefully looked after.
Judith: Or you could just buy some Arabic books for children. They will help you progress in your Arabic studies.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Natasha: The first phrase we’ll look at is "alHamdulillah ´ala assalaama".
Judith: This is translated in the vocabulary as “welcome back.” However, literally you’re saying, “praise God for safety,” that is the safe return. It is simply a convention to say this upon someone’s return.
Natasha: "nihaaya" means “an end” and "'usbuu´" “week.” So "nihaayati al'usbuu´i" means “and end of a week”, that is “weekend.”
GRAMMAR POINT
Judith: The focus of this lesson is prepositions with personal endings. Let’s finish the series with an overview of the shape the prepositions take when they’re combined with personal endings.
Natasha: Arabic preposition includes "ma´" “with,” "biduun" “without,” "li" “for,” "´alay" “upon.”
Judith: You may recall seeing this used in "assalaam ´alaykum" “Peace be upon you.” And of course, there are also other prepositions. To combine any of these with a personal pronoun, for example to say “with me,” “without me,” or the like, you have to use the same personal endings that we already used as possessive endings. We also use them as direct object endings for verbs or for the verb “to have.”
Natasha: Let’s review them again, this time attached to the preposition "li" “for.”
Judith: For me.
Natasha: lii
Judith: For us.
Natasha: lanaa
Judith: For you, when you’re talking to one man.
Natasha: laka
Judith: For you, to a woman.
Natasha: laki
Judith: For you, to two people.
Natasha: lakumaa
Judith: For you, to more than two people.
Natasha: lakum
Judith: For more than two people that are all women.
Natasha: lakunna
Judith: For him.
Natasha: lahuu
Judith: For her.
Natasha: lahaa
Judith: For them both.
Natasha: lahumaa
Judith: For them, when there are more than two people.
Natasha: lahum
Judith: And for them, when there are more than two women only.
Natasha: lahunna
Judith: That just about does it for today.
