Writing characters

Postby mstarjewelry » August 8th, 2008 2:19 am

This may seem like a very basic question, but in certain words, I see characters that I just can't find in the arabic alphabet.
For example in عَلى (c)ala, what is the last character/letter?
And in أُخْرى 'ukhra, what is that last character?
And also in words like الإِنْجْلِيزِيَة al-enjleziya, again what is the last character?
Any insight would be great, I'm just starting to learn arabic.

last letter in ala etc.

The last letter in ala is pronounced is 'a'. It looks like the letter ya but without the dots below it.

The word inglizeeyah - the last letter is a form of the letter ta, third letter in the alphabet. The form at the end of inglizeeyah is known as ta marbooTah which normally shows that a word is feminine.

Hope that helps.

Hi Tariq, yes that is very helpful, I had not found that information anywhere and was perplexed. Thank you!
