Lesson focus

In today's lesson, we'll cover a phrase that will prove invaluable for those of you with allergies to something. Letting other people know about your allergies is vital to a fun and healthy trip. Today, we'll introduce how to say "I'm allergic to something."
To start with, we'll need something that we're allergic to. In some cases, allergies to peanuts can be extremely dangerous so let's start there.
In Arabic, "I am allergic to peanuts" is andi l-hasasiya d l-ful sudani (عندي الحساسية د الفول السوداني).
andi l-hasasiya d l-ful sudani
Let’s break it down: andi l-hasasiya d l-ful sudani
andi l-hasasiya d l-ful sudani
The first word, andi, means "I have."
andi
andi
This is followed by l-hasasiya, which is "allergy"
l-hasasiya
l-hasasiya
So to recap here, we have: andi l-hasasiya
And literally, this means “I have allergy.”
Let’s take a look at the next: d, which means “to”
d
d
Next is l-ful sudani
l-ful sudani, literally this means "Sudanese beans" in Arabic, or "peanuts" in English.
One more time: l-ful sudani
So altogether, we have: andi l-hasasiya d l-ful sudani
And literally, this means “I have allergy to Sudanese beans.”
Now let's go over some other common allergies. Let's try shrimp.
In Arabic, “I’m allergic to shrimp” is: andi l-hasasiya d l-crevet
andi l-hasasiya d l-crevet
Let’s break it down: andi l-hasasiya d l-crevet
andi l-hasasiya d l-crevet
crevet is French for "shrimp" (crevettes) and it’s the word Moroccans use for “shrimp” as well.
Now, let's try milk. “Milk” in Arabic is l-hlib.
l-hlib
l-hlib
So, "I'm allergic to milk" is: andi l-hasasiya d l-hlib.
The only thing that changes here is l-hlib.
In Arabic, "I am having an allergic reaction" is: jatni l-hasasiya (جاتني الحساسية).
jatni l-hasasiya
Let’s break it down by syllable: jatni l-hasasiya
Let's hear it once again: jatni l-hasasiya
The first word, jatni, means "I got"
jatni
jatni
And this is followed by l-hasasiya, which in Arabic is "allergy."
l-hasasiya
l-hasasiya
So to recap here, we have: jatni l-hasasiya
And this means “I’m having an allergic reaction.”
Cultural Insights
If you get an allergic reaction to something, remember to go to a pharmacy and use the phrases we learned in the previous lesson.
So first, you say: jatni l-hasasiya, which means “I'm having an allergic reaction”
Then you can say: bġīt ʾildawā min faḍlak, which means “I’d like some medicine please.”
bġīt ʾildawā min faḍlak
bġīt ʾildawā min faḍlak
