Lesson focus

Today, we're going to work on getting your package one step closer to its intended destination.
In the previous lesson, we discussed the phrase, "I would like to send this package to New York", which was, bġīt nsīfṭ hād al-kuūliyah liniyuūīūrk (بغيت نسيفط هاد الكولية لنيويورك).
bġīt nsīfṭ hād al-kuūliyah liniyuūīūrk
Bġīt is “I’d like to”
nsīfṭ is “send”
hād means “this”
al-kuūliyah is “package”
l is “to”
And, niyuūīūrk at the end.
Again, the location is interchangeable.
When sending a package though, you're going to have to explain what's in the package.
You may even be asked, "What's in the package?" which in Arabic is: šunū f l-kuūliyah? (شنو ف الكولية؟)
Let’s break it down by syllable: šunū f l-kuūliyah?
Now let's hear it once again: šunū f l-kuūliyah?
The first word, šunū (شنو), means "what."
šunū
And, šunū
This is followed by "f" (ف) which means "in"
f
f
So to recap here, we have: šunū f, literally, it means “what in”
Let’s take a look at the next: l-kuūliyah (الكولية), which again means "the package."
l-kuūliyah
l-kuūliyah
“Package” is kuūliyah
And “the package” is l-kuūliyah, which explains why we have l in l-kuūliyah.
So altogether, we have: šunū f l-kuūliyah?
And literally this means "what in the package?” or “what's in the package?"
Cultural Insights
When sending packages out of the country, you're required to fill out a customs declaration form. Be sure to leave the package open because an official is required to see the contents before it's sealed. But if your package is sealed, the post office may or may not make you open it and look at everything you're sending.
I don't recommend you to ship anything fragile but you can buy bubble wrap in the Medina, along with tape and string.
Also, Morocco has a free trade zone with the US, so you don't need to pay any customs fees. Most packages arrive safely but they do look like they've been kicked around the room a few times!

Outro

Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so حظ سعيد, that means "good luck" in Arabic.
Ok, here we go!
"I would like to send this package to New York" - bġīt nsīfṭ hād al-kuūliyah liniyuūīūrk
bġīt nsīfṭ hād al-kuūliyah liniyuūīūrk
bġīt nsīfṭ hād al-kuūliyah liniyuūīūrk
“What’s in the package?” - šunū f l-kuūliyah?
šunū f l-kuūliyah?
šunū f l-kuūliyah?
All right. This is going to do it for this lesson of Arabic Survival Phrases. Remember to stop by ArabicPod101.com. There you’ll find an accompanying PDF, additional learning tools in the premium learning center, and other great Arabic language learning materials. See you soon, which in Arabic is - ilā al-liqāʾ.
