You’re a little nervous at the prospect, but one morning after skipping breakfast, you venture out and approach a vendor on the street who seems to have a nice supply of fresh fruit. “How much are the bananas and apples?” you ask in Arabic. “One kilo of bananas costs three pounds, and one kilo of apples costs twelve pounds,” the vendor replies. “Wow!” you exclaim. “Why are the apples so much more expensive?” The vendor says, “These apples are very fresh, but they’re also imported.” By now you’re stomach is growling, so you answer, “Fine. I’ll take one kilo each of bananas and apples.” As you walk down the street, you bite into an apple. You heard right-the food from street vendors is fresh and delicious!

Along with one of your American friends, you find a street vendor. “Do you have strawberries and mangos?” you ask, using your best Arabic. “I don’t have strawberries, but I do have mangos,” the vendor replies. “Fine,” you say, “We’ll take one kilo each of apples and bananas, and three kilo of mangos.” You figure you need a lot more fruit this time, since your fellow students will no doubt help you eat them! Your friend looks at you in awe. “Your Arabic is very good!” he exclaims “Thanks,” you reply. “The Arabic lessons I took before I came here were great!” After you pay the vendor and walk away, your friend asks, “Why didn’t you leave a tip?” You reply, “I didn’t need to this time.” Take our Arabic lesson to find out why!
